Toastmaster Will has just returned from a week at the beach, and so was having a bit of a transition into the theme of “Saving Money”. Vacations somehow are not the best time to work on frugality.

Denise gave her Ice Breaker. She talked about a difficult time that she had had as a young child. She did manage to overcome many of the concerns that she had had. She changed carriers a couple of times but still had a constant fear of one thing or another. She has persevered thru many high anxiety times, and is using Toastmasters to help overcome the general fear of public speaking.

Steve talked about meeting his future Father-in-Law. His 3rd date with his eventual wife-to-be was a full day sailing with her and her parents. The experience was punishing. He had to learn a lot of nautical terms in a very short time, and his ignorance was, at times, painful.

Michelle talked about a Caribbean Cruise that her family did when she was 4 years old. She was doing the “gestures” speech from the CC Manual, and showed a number of things that she and her non-breathing companion had done during the trip.

Table Topics Master Karin blended the current (How to Save Money) and previous (7 Dwarves) themes and had us describe how each of the Snow White characters would advise saving money. It was not a simple as it might sound, but a good time was had by all.

Scott led the Evaluation Team. First-time evaluator Mary evaluated Denise’s Ice Breaker. Cindy (also a first time evaluator) evaluated Steve. Richard evaluated Michelle. Scott as GE focused on evaluating the Evaluators. The two first-time evaluators did a very good job and got specific, useful feedback from Scott. Scott also had feedback for Toastmaster Will. Grammarian James brought up a point that we’ve probably not heard before – a mondegreen. (yes, I had to look it up, too – it’s a mishearing or misinterpretation of a phrase).

Toast of the Day went to Denise for a remarkable Ice Breaker

Most Improved Speaker went to Michelle W

Best table topics went to Julie and Cindy (tie)

Best Evaluator went to Richard R

Notes:

Cindy will be out for a while for a Suvivorship program, and then additional surgery.

Bill reminded us of the need for both Competitors and roles for the Contest on the 15th

Michelle noted the need for judges at the Chamber Club on ht e21st.

We have a chance to participate in the Northgate festival – and so need some folks to man the booth

Also need some roles for the Area Contest on the 20th

Dues are due!

We had a fun meeting – Toastmaster Barney led with his dry sense of humor. The term “corny” had Barney going when he first arrived here in the US…..

Mary talked about the “shadow” that we all have. It’s the part of ourselves that we try to contain or deny – things like girls who are assertive or intelligent, or boys who are more emotionally expressive, more than the “norm” for their gender. These traits can be buried, which can be counter-productive. Exploring these traits and understanding them can help lead a more complete life.

Bill talked about how Bernoulli was, in some ways, the father of flight. He came up with the “simple” principle – fluids that move faster have lower pressure. This was in 1730. Venturi in 1746 came up with the extension of that principle – if you reduce the diameter of a pipe (like a pinch), the pinch point has lower pressure, because the fluid is traveling faster. This makes flying possible, because the curved top of a wing makes the air travel further, and so faster. The “slower” air on the bottom of the wing pushes it up.

Richard talked about how the formalized stock market concept of Market, Limit, and Stop-Loss orders can apply to everyday life. We use these concepts whenever we buy or sell things. Using the knowledge can make us better purchasers.

Melissa led a movie-oriented set of Table Topics. There was an envelope full of movie lines, and we had to review the movie. Many of the lines were, well, less than extremely well known. Creativity ruled.

Evaluation was interesting in that all 3 speakers spoke on the same project – CC manual # 3, Get to the Point. General Evaluator Steve led an experienced team: James evaluated Mary, Yao evaluated Bill, and Michelle evaluated Richard.

Steve had some useful comments for both the speakers and the evaluators.

Toast of the Day went to Mary for inspiring progress thru the CC manual.

Most Improved Speaker went to Bill D

Best Table Topics went to Fred C

Best Evaluator went to Steve K

Other Notes:

Speech contest is in 3 weeks – Humorous Speech and Evaluation. September 15th at the usual time.

Michelle volunteered to be Toastmaster

Mary needs any schedule requests for October.

Dues are due soon….October 1st.

Several folks worked Division B Officer training – Richard, Barney, and Melissa have helped out so far.

Anderson House TM will be having their contest on Sept 15th at 7:15

Division contest on September 23rd in Evening

Northgate Chamber Festival – September 11th from 10:00 to 7:00 PM we got a booth

Toastmaster (and Immediate Past President) Melissa had us on a fun meeting with the theme “Dog House”

Opener Bill had a funny story about building a dog house for his dog “Moonshine”. After he built it, Moonshine refused to use it…..

Barney did one of the speeches from the Interpersonal Communications manual, using Steve as his partner. This is a 3 part speech, with a lead in speech, a role play dialog with a partner, and an evaluation of the topic. We had an interesting, if short, round robin evaluation as part of the presentation.

James hit a nerve with a discussion about a home improvement project…he needed to make a change from doing the work to managing the work. Fortunately, he’s done the Project Manager role before, so it was not a disaster…..

Julie did a reading of a poem from her childhood.

Table topics Master Yao had a relatively small group to torment tonight, since we were thinly attended.

General Evaluator Richard led the Evaluation Team. Bill evaluated Barney’s speech, Dale evaluated James, and Steve evaluated Julie.

Toast of the Day went to Everyone, for pitching in to fill all the roles, and have a seamless meeting

Most Improved Speaker went to James

Best table Topics went to Scott

Best Evaluator was a 3 way tie: Richard, Dale, and Steve.

Richard
Club Secretary

Interesting meeting. James as both Presiding Officer and Toastmaster kept things moving. Michelle opened with a discussion of the concept of “Cosmos”, the science of everything.

Joe spoke about the Pike Place Market Foundation, and the community that it serves. There are 4 components of the Foundation: Medical Clinic, Day Care, Food Bank, and Senior Center. They also do a fun fund raiser, Sunset Supper – 40 wineries and restaurants are serving…

Bill led an interesting set of Table Topics. Imagine discourse on Jamaican Mythology, O’Ryan’s belt, Black Holes, planetary rotation, or Martian taxes. Ample food for thought…..

Mike S led a talented Evaluation Team. Will evaluated Joe, and Scott evaluated Patrick. Mike offered an appealing suggestion – have an outdoor meeting! The courtyard offers a reasonable spot…

Mike had a number of excellent points about the evaluators and the meeting in general.

Toast of the Day went to Joe for a very good speech which brought a lot of good information to the meeting.

Most Improved Speaker went to Joe

Best Table Topics went to Barney

Best Evaluator went to Scott

We also voted in a new Member – Matt

This was a fun, if sparsely attended meeting. Barney opened with a hilarious diatribe on pirating. Scott, as our Toastmaster, illustrated the concept of Pirating – he passed our bags of “Pirate’s Booty” (baked rice and corn puffs) (and they were good….). We even had the requisite “talk like a pirate” section.

We also had a change in the agenda – Richard will do an impromptu speech, based on one of the suggestions from the audience, and James will evaluate him (Richard was scheduled to be Evaluator # 1)

Mary had a very interesting discussion of Free Radicals. Protandim is a substance that makes a huge difference in the ability of the body to fight a variety of problems, ranging from arthritis to cancer. There are a number of studies in process, and the initial results are amazingly positive.

Richard talked about “The Pirate’s Code”. Surprisingly, the pirates had a better life and more freedom than the Navy. And they were paid better, to boot.

Table Topic Master Fred had some interesting questions…..and we had some interesting answers. Tall Tales, indeed!

General Evaluator Dale led an excellent evaluation team. Bill evaluated Mary, and James evaluated Richard. Dale had useful comments about the meeting as a whole – and about the Evaluators and how they did. Patrick gave a marvelous Grammarian’s report!

Toast of the Day went to Mary W, for NOT being rummy

Most Improved Speaker went to Mary W

Best Evaluator went to James

Best Table Topics went to Steve K

Meeting adjourned at 6:34

Tonight’s meeting was fun. Toastmaster Richard led timely meeting (we actually finished 15 minutes “early”, but without being rushed)

Michelle talked about how to accept an award – since she is our newest Distinguished Toastmaster.

Steve (Stefano) had us in stitches as he explained how the lowly Pigeon became an Italian Icon. Stefano stayed in character as he described the city-state wars of the 13th century.

Immediate Past President Melissa did Project # 4, The Play. Melissa did a scene from the TV show “Star Trek: Enterprise – Vox Sola”. Star Trek: Enterprise was the prequel to the original Star Trek series. It put Captain Archer in charge of the ship that came along about 100 years before James Kirk.

Topic Master Will Wilcox had us thinking about numbers. He had us draw a number-oriented phrase from an envelope, and make a topic from it. Examples are “Every dog has one free bite”, or “On a scale of 1-10…” There were some ah, creative responses……

Club President James was out General Evaluator, and led a very experience evaluation team. Julie S evaluated Michelle W, Karin G evaluated Steve K, and Fred C evaluated Melissa A. James had some insightful comments on the entire meeting.

Toast of the Day went to Michelle – for having achieved Distinguished Toastmaster

Most Improved Speaker went to Steve K
Best Table Topics went to John A and Barney C (tie)
Best Evaluator went to Karin G

Toastmaster Dale led a rousing meeting. Opener Richard talked about how far we’ve come with Modern Marvels – and where we might go…..

Cindy talked about not letting HOPE die…..She doesn’t mean hope in the sense of “wishful thinking” – rather in the form of firm assurance. She spoke of the three candles of Peace, Faith, and Love. Even when these three die off, Hope can keep them burning. Cindy did a wonderful job of controlling her emotions – this is the first anniversary of her breast cancer treatment.

Scott asks – what happens when life TAKES your lemons? Great story about Scott’s first car, and how to persevere when things don’t look so good.

Joe took a text about the fact that Seattle has the highest “boats per capita” number in the country. He bought a boat a few years ago – and some of the lessons that he learned……Cost, type (power vs. sail), and where/how to keep it – trailer vs. moorage. Remember, .BOAT = “break out another thousand”…..

Table Topics Master James had us going with an interesting problem – use two words/phrases that he gave us, in addition to the Word of the Day, to make a modern marvel. Both of our guests, Matt and Gary both participated!
