May 25 Meeting Minutes

May 25th, 2011 | By | Category: Meeting Summaries

Club President James gaveled the meeting to order at 5:35. There were no guests.

Opener Anna spoke of the NW Folklife festival, and what it has meant to her. It’s the kickoff of summer here in the Northwest. She, and her daughters are regular attendees. In fact, her daughters asked her to wash some of their Folklife T-shirts to be ready for this weekend.

Speaker # 1, Matt, talked about Bruins Hockey Rules.  He gave us some background in the fanaticism of Boston sports fans, and how the Bruins worked to raise the level surrounding their team. They created  several videos that went viral. The videos were funny and inspirational.

Speaker # 2, Cindy talked about white water rafting. She and a group of co-workers were to go rafting, and she was a bit concerned, because she can’t swim. The day starts by putting on a wet suit. If you’ve never done it, it’s difficult. She goes on to get a lift jacket, and a helmet. They got some explicit instructions in the pre-launch briefing. The actual run was interesting, and occasionally exciting. But the most “fun” was changing out of the wet suit at the end, while on the bus going back home……

Speaker # 3, Scott, was presenting a story. When he was starting college, he had a somewhat claustrophobic living arrangement. This was not satisfactory, so he started looking for another place to live. The first week of school is not a good time to be looking, so Scott ended up living with his grandmother, 5 miles from campus. He had a plan to avoid a lot of interaction with her (since he expected her to be uncomfortably nosey), but for a long list of reasons, it didn’t work out that way. Scott had a wonderful recounting about all the things that he learned about her, and how he ended up using much of that in the eulogy that he gave at her funeral a couple of years later.

Table Topic Master Bill had a jar of words, which he asked us to use (draw 3 words) in recounting a story about our experience at Folklife. Turns out that there are more than a few folks who haven’t been to the Northwest Folklife Festival!

General Evaluator Lance led an experienced evaluation team. Richard evaluated Matt, James evaluated Cindy, and Joe evaluated Scott. Lance had some pertinent comments about the meeting as a whole. Tammie had a most interesting Grammarian’s Report.

Toast of the Day went to Matt – despite being a speaker, he was willing to step up to multiple other roles.

Most Improved Speaker went to Cindy

Best Table Topics was won by Pete

Best Evaluator went to Jenee and Joe (tie)
