June 8 Meeting Minutes
Jun 8th, 2011 | By richardr | Category: Meeting SummariesClub President James started off the meeting at 5:30. We have 3 guests, former Members Dick N and Madeleine K, visiting from Maryland. Madeleine gave a presentation last Saturday that qualified her for DTM! Also visiting was Yonas, and not his first TM meeting.
Opener Joe discussed the importance of, and honoring of, Fathers. It was originally proposed shortly after the newly noted Mother’s Day. The first celebration was in Spokane, WA, in 1920! However, it wasn’t until 1972 that it became officially recognized.
Toastmaster Cindy noted that Opener Joe had stolen most of her material, and she didn’t really have a Plan B.
Our first speaker James talked about working from home. There are both good and not-so-good points. Some of the key things are 1) setting a basic schedule, and enforcing the “work” time paradigm 2) having a defined office space with a good ergonomic setup, and 3) getting out of the office occasionally. Getting out of the office is key – go out for coffee, work out, whatever, just avoid becoming a hermit. James feels that he’s just as effective at home as he would be at the office, but there are some things to watch out for.
Our second speaker, Lance, talked about being a Pirate (just be able to say “Yo-Ho!”). However, there are degrees of Pirates, and to truly make a mark, you GottaGettaGimickTM. Lance claims that he’s one of the calmer ones…..the “best” of them are big hearted guys, but not especially big brained……Lance’s stories were very funny – and we were kept laughing for the entire speech.
Topic Master (Mistress?) Tammie was very well prepared for the Meeting theme of “Road Ahead”. However, what we actually did was to play the role of famous Fathers, in a scenario that Tammie provided. There were some very funny and creative questions, and more creative answers.
General Evaluator Mary led a very good evaluation team. Pete evaluated James, Anna (first time evaluator) evaluated Lance. Ah Counter Michelle highlighted the need to be aware of filler words.
Toast of the day – Anna for an excellent job on her first evaluation.
Most Improved Speaker went to James E
Best Table Topics went to Jenee
Best Evaluator went to Pete D
